Our Story

The Beginning

The Humane Society of Edmonson County was officially founded on August 2nd, 2016.  It has a deeper history though.

It began when two of our founders became aware of deplorable conditions at the animal shelter in Edmonson County, KY and became involved in the mission to have it come up to state standards or shut down.  You can find more information about it here and here. After the shelter was shut down by the Kentucky State Police on June 4th, 2016 and the animals were evacuated (article). It was time for more action.

The Edmonson County Fiscal Court quickly voted to end the contract with the “shelter” and hire a new animal control officer (article).

Then Until Now

The Humane Society of Edmonson County is a 501(c)3 non-profit working to find the funding and a suitable place for an animal shelter in Edmonson County.  We are doing this by reaching out to the community and through grant programs that are available nationally.

We have a volunteers who have opened up their homes to foster felines. Most of the time we bring in motherless kittens that have been separated. We care for them until they are at an age where they can be adopted or transferred to another organization.

We have partnered with All Cats and Dogs Veterinary Hospital, the Barren River Animal Welfare Association and The Fix Foundation to bring low cost spay/neuter services to the county along with other programs such as microchip and rabies clinics for owned pets in our area.

Going Forward

Working as a community, the future is looking much brighter for the animals of Edmonson County!
